"Ride The Rio" Goes To The Races!
It's not often you get to sponsor a race
bike. Actually, my idea to approach my racing friend Tim Haas, to allow me to
become one of his sponsors, was not very well thought out. I thought, "What a
neat idea!" but I didn't think much beyond that.
The idea was simple: The kind of people
that go to the local club races are the kind of people that would enjoy "Ride
The Rio". Not only that, but Tim is an instructor for
Lone Star Track Days and he
uses his RC51 race bike for track day instruction. And, just like the folks
that go to the races, the people that attend track days, generally, are the
folks that would be a good fit for attending RTR.
So I called Tim. "Hey, Buddy ol' pal,
how're ya doin'?" I did my best to make him think it was a "casual call",
friend to friend. We chit-chatted a bit, and then I asked. "Tim, if I gave you
some money, would you put a few "RideTheRio.Com" stickers on the race bike?"
Without even hesitating, Tim said, "Of
course! I'd love to! I love "Ride The Rio"!" And Tim wouldn't even take any
money! I insisted, and we finally agreed exactly what "Ride The Rio" would do
for Tim's race efforts. As Tim warmed to the idea, he suggested tipping me
upside down and shaking me for any loose change that might fall out of my
pockets. Nice guy.
Tim races his Honda RC51 Superbike in the
SuperTwins Expert and the Heavyweight Supersport Expert classes
of the CMRA (Central Motorcycle
Roadracing Association) in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Though he's missed a
couple of races, he stands a close 7th overall in Heavyweight Supersport, and
a solid 7th overall in SuperTwins with two race weekends still to come. The
RC51 is a real looker, and it's only his first season on the big Twin. He's
certain that, with more suspension work, he'll get the chassis sorted out and
begin to move up in the field.
Tim's a super guy and a good racer, and
he's spreading the good word about RTR. We know that he'll get to the top the
podium soon!
Visit the CMRA web site to track Tim's
progress, and visit RTR for the latest
on the HSTA rally famous for being "In the middle of winter, in the middle of
nowhere" - and now: At The Races!
